DIY Ear Piercing Kit

 

We tried out this DIY ear piercing kit and want to tell you about it.

I bought this kit from Ebay having found out how expensive it is to get your ears pierced in a salon (£50 minimum it seems!). I bought a pack of 10 for £5.16. That works out at about £1 for two ears or two piercings. £1 a pair! A LOT cheaper!

Here are my step-by-step instructions on how to use the kit.

Apply some cooling gel if you are really scared of the pain. We found it wasn't needed as the piercing was not painful at all. 

Wipe the ear with the alcohol cloth included in the kit.

Mark the spot for piercing with a permanent marker pen. Look from all angles but make sure you can see the dots when looking straight at the face. 

1. Remove the white plastic tab above the butterfly clip.

2. Position the piercer onto the ear and match up the point of the earring with the dot. 

3. Make sure the earlobe is not folded or wrinkled front or back.

4. Clamp down on the piercer with your weaker hand until it grips the earlobe. Higher up the earlobe, it might not grip and then you will need to be careful to not move.

5. Using your strongest hand, push the blue trigger hard until it shoots. 

6. Make sure the piercer is straight with consideration for the angle the final earring will be in the earlobe. 

7. Gently pull the piercer down and it will release itself from the earring, which will not be fitted to the ear.

We found these piercers were excellent and totally painless and they even had clear diamantes for instant sparkle! The 'bang' was no where near as jolting as in a salon. The very clever design creates this sudden shoot by pressure building and eventually pushing off tiny bits of plastic. The downsides are that it was a little tricky positioning the point and, on my ears higher up the lobe (2nd pair), the piercer couldn't close enough to grip my lobe so it hovered a bit. 

My daughter had been looking forward to getting her ears pierced for so long, so finally braving it and also trusting me to do it well was very brave of her. She loves the result and was so relieved it didn't hurt at all. Three days on and he piercings do not hurt and have not bled. The earrings are quite short with a click stop at the back to ensure the butterfly doesn't fall off, so perfect for sleeping. They are also hypoallergenic so have caused no irritation.

This is a follow-up post from the DIY 70s Farrah Fawcett Haircut post I made recently. I've been asked to take more photos of my daughter so that people can see the haircut in more poses. It's her birthday today so we had a little fashion shoot with her in some of her clothes, some of mine and some things from our vintage/pre-loved shop. All of our clothes are vintage/pre-loved so we have a very weird and wonderful wardrobe between us.

Her hair has not been washed or styled for these photos. In fact, it's not been washed or brushed in two days. She wakes up with hair like this and she doesn't need to touch it or use any products. I think it must be the perfect cut for her hair and face as a good cut should mean you wake up with great hair not hair that needs washing and styling into something it's not.

I think our hair is perfectly designed to suit our face shape and colouring and I hope these photos encourage more young women to love the hair they were born with. If you were born with curly hair, it's because that's what suits you best. Whatever texture and colour it is when left natural, that is the best it could possibly be. I'm even embracing my grey strands as they suit my aging face. A mop of perfect brown hair just doesn't look right on an old face.

I also hope more women will realise how good it is to have short hair around the face to frame it. What mistake almost all young women are making is focusing on the ends of the hair and growing the hair too long around the face. The best of the hair is then on the chest area where the masse of hair tends to be, often leaving flat hair on the head, an over-exposed forehead and baldness at the parting. As people tend to spend most of the time looking at your face, they'll think you look better if you integrate your hair with your face rather than your hair with your chest and back. I'll make another post about this soon with photos of people who I think would look ten times better with lots of curls around the face.

Best of all, you don't have to keep tossing your hair from one side to the other, you don't need any grips/bands and you won't get a painful scalp from the weight of your hair pulling at your follicles. Despite her young years, my daughter had started to look thin at the parting due to years of long thick hair pulling down, often in a ponytail. Not only does the weight pulling on the follicles cause thinning but the parting itself exposes the scalp to sunlight. Any sunburn on your scalp will cause inflammation, which traumatises the follicles. I will never go back to having all long hair without layers. It's so liberating to have loose and lightweight hair that doesn't need to be controlled and has lots of movement...and no pain! My hair is also thicker at the crown than when it was all long, so your hair will recover from thinning if you lighten the weight and protect your scalp from sunlight.

The fact you can achieve this haircut free-of-charge, whenever you feel like it in the comfort of your own home without chemicals and without the need for any equipment other than a few bands and some scissors is a bonus.

How to do a DIY 70s shag Farrah Fawcett haircut yourself in a few easy steps.



Watch me, 'Handy Lady' transform my daughter's hair in a few minutes.

Her hair dominated her look and personality, but not in a good way. People only focused on her long blonde hair and not on her. She, also, had become totally enamoured by her hair to the detriment of everything else in her life. It took ages to wash and dry, was very hard to style, was very knotty, was often left in a boring low ponytail that pulled on her scalp and started to cause traction alopecia and was very badly sun damaged after living in Spain.

She's a very active girl and often out on her bike and I wanted her to have a hairstyle she didn't need to fix back and one she could forget about. I wanted her to be able to just jump out of bed and not have to even think about her hair, but I also wanted it to suit her face. She has curly hair but the length and dryness had killed off all the curls. I knew that short layers all over her head would make her hair spring into natural curls.

Although I blow-dried it for the video, we've since discovered her hair styles itself into the most amazing 70s shaggy mass of bouncy curls with a fringe that naturally lifts up and parts. She wakes up looking like she's just been to the beauty palour!

Her hair looks darker blonde now as all the sun-bleached hair has gone, but it now looks much shinier and the colour suits her. I always think each person's natural shade is the perfect one for them as is their natural texture. I wish more young women realised what amazing hair they were born with and, instead of spending a fortune on straightening and colouring, just found the right cut for their individual hair and face.

You can give yourself this 70s shag Farrah Fawcett haircut yourself at home in a few simple steps. Brush your hair into a ponytail at the top of your forehead. Put two more hairbands onto the ponytail to mark the line where you want to cut. I put the bands above and below about 11cm but I will do it at 10cm next time. At this length, you will have a fringe that pulls down to the end of your nose. If you have thick hair with natural curl it will lift up a lot once layered with the one cut. Get the length right as you won't be able to trim more off. It's impossible to trim off from this thick stump of hair....you'll have to wait a month. Make sure you cut the ponytail off straight or it will be difficult to correct.

Cut the hair with sharp scissors if you have any. Mine were actually quite blunt, but I managed to hack it off. Once the ponytail is cut off, neaten the stump and round off the edges. You could probably cut it off with trimmers. Let the hair down and shake it out to see how well it frames the face. Then, you need to trim the fringe. Pull down to the nose the fringe area. It doesn't have to be perfect. Nip it together with your fingers and cut it to the end of your nose or a bit higher. Then thin it slightly at the ends using thinning scissors or diagonal cuts with normal scissors. This part isn't essential.

Next, you need to part the hair at the back and comb each side to the front. Comb it flat onto the chest area from the back. Then cut straight across at the length you want. I cut this length two times until the bottom edge thickened up just enough. I think it was about two inches I cut off. Check each side is the same....and that's it! Three easy steps to achieving a DIY 70s shag Farrah Fawcett haircut at home....yourself! Or you can get someone else to do it for you or, best of all, you can do it to other family members of friends to make them look amazing and save them a fortune.
